The Virtual Destination Italy project, co-financed by Agenda Digitale – Industria sostenibile (Digital Agenda and Sustainable Industry) project of the Ministry of Economic Development, has chosen Val d’Orcia as a pilot territory for the experimentation of a new innovative technological platform for the quality industry of cultural, food and wine and landscape tourism.
The Val d’Orcia consists of five splendid municipalities: Castiglione d’Orcia, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani and San Quirico d’Orcia. This territory represents an exceptional example of the Renaissance landscape redesign and is also an important natural, artistic and cultural park. Since July 2, 2004 it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the excellent conservation of its panorama, as produced by an intelligent work of anthropization, which had a considerable influence on many Italian and international artists.
Paired with its dedicated multilingual website available on iOS and Android platforms, a mobile app for smartphones and tablets offers 12 thematic routes to discover the area through virtual and augmented reality, 360° photos, videos and suggestions on experiences and places to visit.
